Kalabharathi National Dance and Music Festival 2014

Kalabharathi National Dance and Music Festival at Thrissur, Kerala from 26 to 30 Nov 2014. The event inaugurated by M A Baby,the former minister for education and culture,at Sahithya Academy hall, Thrissur is organised by  Kalabharathi Foundation for Indian Culture and Heritage .Talented singers and dancers are participating in this five day event.

NangiarKoothu by Kalamandalam Prasanthi

The monthly performance of Sreekrishnacharitham NagiarKoothu by Kalamandalam Prasanthi will be held on 22nd November 2014 at Thrisur. Prasanthi will be accompanied by Kalamandalam Jayaraj and Kalamandalam Manikandan on Mizhavu,the percussion; Kalanilayam Rajan on Idakka percussion and Kalamandalam Sangeetha on thalam , the cymbals. The scenes from Jarasandhayuddham will be performed by Prasanthi on Saturday, 22nd from 06.30 pm. Thekke Swamiar Madom at Pazhayanadakkavu, Thrissur, Kerala will be the venue of the event.

Bharatanatyam Workshop by Rama Vaidyanathan

A workshop on bharathanatyam was held at the Koothambalam of Kerala Kalamandalam, Thrissur Dt., Kerala from 06 to 10 may 2014. The 5-day workshop was conducted by Rama Vaidyanathan, an exponent in the Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam and was organised by Kalaanidhaa, an intitutuion dedicated to arts.

Thrissur Celebrating the Pooram


Thrissur Pooram, one of the main festivals of Kerala, was celebrated at Thrissur, the cultural capital of state,on 09th of  May this year. The festival, as usual, attracted huge crowd to Thekkinkad Maidanam, the Vadakkumnathan temple ground, where the pooram is conducted every year.The celebrations of pooram began in the city days before. People from all over the world gathered here for witnessing the festival, which is considered as one of the main and biggest temple festivals of Kerala. 


The colourful festival started with the Kodiyettam, the ritualistic hosting of festive flag, on 03 May 2014, seven days before the Thrissur pooram. Ten temples, viz, Thiruvambady, Paramekkavu , Ayyanthole Karthyayini ,Nethilakkavu Bhagavathi , Karamukku ,  Laloor Bhagavathi, Choorakkattukavu Bhagavathi, Chembukkavu Bhagavathi, Panamukkumpally Sastha and Kanimangalam Sastha, participate in this unique festival. These temples form two different groups . Thiruvambadi temple and Parammekkavu temple are the leaders of the two different groups and the key participants of this festival. 

The day before Thrissur pooram, on 08 May 2014, there was exhibitions of the decorations for the elephants participating in pooram, called Aanachamaya Pradarsanam. The exhibitions were conducted by the leaders of the two teams in the festival - the Thiruvambadi and Parammekkavu temples.

The main festival, the Thrissur pooram was celebrated on 09th May 2014 with several rituals including Madathilvaravu, kudamattom and Elanjithara Melam, creating a feast on percussion instruments. The spectacular fireworks begins on 03.00am and continue till early morning. On 10th May, there is Pakal pooram,a brief of the Thrissur Pooram, especially for the localities. The festival ends with the ritual upacharam cholli piriyal, the farewell.

A Musical Evening

The music lovers of Thrissur, Kerala in association with Harmony School of Music organised an evening of music on 20th April 2014 at Sahitya Academy Hall, Thrissur.The event presented the the reviews on the songs of late K P Udayabhanu, the playback singer and music director in Malayalam. A documentary of V A Babumaster on the works of late playback singer was played at the event. The musical concert by the nephew of Udayabhanu, Balamurali K P, the guitar performance by Sangeeth Pavithran  and tabla by the students of N V Suresh Master were the main attractions.

The association of music lovers of Thrissur is an initiative by Harmony School of Music, a music training institution which has completed their successful 16 years in their drive of music. The main venture of this association is to enhance the level of interest in music among the common people. The association was inaugurated on January 2013 by P Jayachandran, the Malayalam playback singer. Since now, has conducted six programmes in memory of the great singers and music directors of Malayalam - G Devarajan, M S Babural, Raveendran Master, V Dakshinamoorthy, K Raghavan and K P Udayabhanu.

Advanced Acting Workshop


Advanced acting workshop by Shri Prasanna, the famous theatre- person, at School of Drama Campus, Thrissur, Kerala. The three day workshop from 11 to 13 April 2014, is organized by the School of Drama Alumni association.


Shri  Prasanna  is a playwright and director from Karnataka, India. He was a student of National School of Drama and had won several awards including Sangeet Natak Academy Award.


School of Drama, Thrissur is a unique institution in Kerala affiliated with the National School of Drama  providing training in theatre arts. The institution established in 1977 at Aranattukara, Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, is recognized by University of Calicut.

Thiruvtsavam at Thiruvambady temple, Thrissur


The Thiruvambadi temple at Shornur road in Thrissur,  Kerala is one of the main temples participating in Thrissur pooram festival. The main deity of the temple temple is Lord Sree Krishna with equally important Godess Bhagavathy worshipped in a shrine to the left of Lord Krishna. The other sub deities of the temple include Lord Ganesha and Dharmasastha.

Thiruvambadi temple is celebrating the 8-day festival called Thiruutsavam from 12 to 19 March 2014. The festival is conducted every year in the Malayalam month of Kumbham in Pooyam aster. The festival begins with kodiyettam and end up with aarattu on the final day.


This year, on 12th March 2014 there will be kodiyettam in the evening. Many other cultural programmes are conducted during these days in the temple.  Some of them are Chakyarkoothu (Sanskrit dance drama), Thayambaka (using percussion instruments), Kathakali (the traditional classical dance of Kerala) and other classical dance programmes. On 18th and 19th , the last two days of the festival, there will be rituals like ‘Palli Nayattu’ (the holy hunting of God), ‘Palliunarthal’ (rising up of the God from sleep),’kodiyirekkal’ (setting down the festive flag) and ‘aarattu’(the holy bath). There will be processions by caparisoned elephants for all the ritual and tantric events.

Uthralikikavu Pooram, Thrissur

Uthralikikavu temple celebrated its Pooram at Wadakkanchery, Thrissur on 25 February 2014 .  The festival began with ceremonial procession with elephants  accompanied by panchavadyam ( in percussion instruments) led by Annamada Parameswara Marar and Chottanikkara Vijayan. Both Enkakkadu Desam and Kumaranellur Desam with thousands of people participated in the festival making it more colorful. The festival ended up with spectacular fireworks.

South Indian Agri Expo 2014

 Agri Fiesta 2014, the South Indian Agri Expo organized by Kerala Agricultural University was inaugurated on 29 Feb 2013 at Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara, Thrissur in Kerala .  The event provides a platform for research organizations, development departments, farmers and other agricultural sectors to showcase their products and discuss on new technologies in agriculture. The Fiesta concludes 06th March 2014.

Actress Jayabharathi at Vadakkumnathan Shiva Temple, Thrissur

Jayabharathi, Indian film actress had a classical dance performance for Shivarathri festival at  Vadakkumnathan temple, Thrissur on Sunday, 23 February 2014.

The actress mesmerized the audience with her graceful steps. She started her performance with Arthanareeswara and ended up with a Meera Bhajan. Jayanharathi danced up with the krithi's of Muthuswami Deekshithar. She was accompanied by a group of artists for dance and music.  Jayabharathi, after long years in Classical dance, ended her  performance attracting a huge audience. Ajeesh Manjeri, Rajesh, Vaidehi, Pavana, the dancers and Venugopal, Sakthivel, Sunil Kumar and Sikhamani, for music completes the entire team.

Anniversary Celebrations of Kathakali club, Thrissur

49th Anniversary Celebrations of Kathakali club, Thrissur was held at Parammekkavu temple agrasala at Thrissur, Kerala.

The plays 'Nalacharitham Randam Divasam’ and ‘Baka Vadham’ featuring Kalamandalam Gopi, Nelliyodu Vasudevan Namboodiri, Margi Vijayakumar, Kalamandalam Manoj, Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier, Kalamandalam Shanmughadas and others were staged.
