Third Annual Celebrations of Satkalapeedom at Payyannur


The third annual celebrations of Satkalapeedom at Payyannur, Kannur, Kerala will be conducted from 03 to 07 Dec 2014 at Ayodhya Auditorium, Kannur. The five day celebration, inaugurated by Denedra Kasyap, DIG, Kannur has included cultural events - music, kathakali, drama etc. The event starting from 06.30 pm at 03rd Dec, will present Satkalaratna Award to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasya, Indian classical flautist.  Musical programme U Rajesh (Mandolin) and team is held on the same day.

Participating artists and characters are Padmashree Kalamandalam Gopi as Arjunan, Margi Vijayakumar as Brahmanan, Kalamandalam Ravikumar as Sreekrishnan, Kalamandalam Jishnu Ravi as Bhramanasthree, the lady character. The accompanying team include Pathiyoor Sankarankutty and Kalamandalam Babu Namboothiri (Song), Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan (Chenda), Kottakkal Ravi (Maddalam) and Kalamandalam Sivaraman (Chutti).

Acting Rehearsal of Kathakali

Watch the acting rehearsal of Kathakali. The story of the dance drama is Dronacharitham , a new story in Kathakali, written by Kottakkal Pradeep. PSV Natyasangham at Kottakkal, Malappuram Dt in Kerala is organizing this play.

Dronacharitham Kathakali had its initial performance at Kottakkal. The play was staged at Palakkad Kathakali Trust on November as a part of their monthly performance of Kathakali.

Mohiniyattam by Smitha Rajan

Mohiniyattam, the Indian classical dance form from Kerala. Watch the mohiniyattam performance by Smitha Rajan, the grand daughter of the maestros in Indian Classical dance Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma.

The expressive presentation of Smitha was on the Mohini Nrithyathi Festival held at Thrissur on Dec 2013. The highly talented dancer from Eranakulam, Kerala is now settled at US. She is running a dance school in US called Nrithyakshethra, the temple of Dance.

Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair was an exponent in Kathakali and Kalayanikutty Amma is known as the mother of Mohiniyattam

Annual Celebrations of Payyannur Kathakali Arangu

16th Annual  Celebrations of Payyannur Kathakali Arangu is to be conducted on 01 June 2014 at Ayodhya Auditorium in Payyannur, Kannur Dt., Kerala . The event is inaugurated by K A Fransis, Editor in charge of Malayala Manorama magazine and Chairman of Lalithakala Academy. This year the annual celebrations are dedicated to the maestro in Kathakali, Late Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair in connection with his 100th birth anniversary. The programmes starts from 09.00 pm. Entry is restricted by pass.

The performances starts after the inaugural session. Some of the main programmes are listed here.

Kathakali on 29 May 2014

PSV Natya Sangham is a Kathakali School by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal in Malappuram district, Kerala. Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal is one of the pioneer institution in Ayurveda, the oldest and natural medicinal system of India.  
The Natya Sangham perform Kathakali nationally and internationally. The group has a performance at Punchaman Illam, Mavelikara, Kerala on 29 May 2014 at 07.00 pm. The play is based on the story, Rugmangada Charitham.

Kathakali, As an Intro to the Birth Centenary Celebrations

Kathakali performances organised by Edappally Sangeetha Aswaaka Sadassu, Edappally, Kochi 
in association with Kalivilakku, the organisation for arts, will take place on 24th and 25th of May 2014 at Changampuzha Park , Edappally ,Kochi, Kerala. The event is an introductory performance to the Birth Centenary celebrations of Late Padmashree Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair Aassan, eminent Kathakali artist.



Two different Kathakali plays are held in the two evenings.

On 24 May 2014, the performance is based on the story Nalacharitham, Randam Divassam, Nalacharitham, the Second Day. The artists and characters involved are Priya Namboothiri as Kaattalan and Haripriya Namboothiri as Damayanthi. The Kathakali song is by Kalamandalam Bhavadasan Namboothiri and Kalamandalam Krishanakumar. The percussions Chenda and Maddalam is handled by Thrippunithura Gopalakrishnan Thamburan and R.L.V Jithin. The costumes and Make-up (Chutti), Greenrooom and the backstage are by Kalamandalam Radhakrishnan and Eroor Surendran & party.

The Second day evening (25 May 2014) will witness the performance on Kalyanisoughandhikam (Story / Katha). The Cast and Crew will be Sadanam Krishnankutty (Bheeman), FACT Bijubhaskar ( Paanjali ), Sadanam Balakrishnan (Hanuman), Sadanam Sivadas and Kalamandalam Rajesh Babu (Song / Paattu), Sadanam Ramakrishnan (Chenda, the percussion), Kalanilayam Prakashan( Maddalam- the percussion), Eroor Manoj(Costumes and Make-up / Chutti) and Eroor Sasi & party (Greenroom and Backstage).

In Memory of a Birth Day


Kalasagar, the organisation founded by Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, maestro of percussion Chenda at Kavalappara, Palakkad Dt., Kerala and  Palakkad Kathakali Trust is jointly organizing the 90th Birth anniversary celebration of  the maestro on 28 May 2014 . The event named Oru Pirannalinte Ormmakku, In Memory of a Birthday, held at Muncipal Town Hall, PalakkadKerala honors artists from different fields of art & culture.



A Melappadam Kacheri, the Orchestra Concert and an over night Kathakali performance  is held on the same day. The Melappadam Kacheri is presented by the disciples of Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval. The over night   Kathakali  performance narrates the three stories - Bheeshma Prathijgna, Dasamugha Ravanan and Baali Vadham. Major artists like Sadanam Krishnankutty, Kottakkal Chandra Sekharan, Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan and Kottakkal Sivadas will play leading roles.

Hundredth Birth Anniversary Celebrated

The centenary birth celebrations of Late Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Late Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, the legends of Indian Classical dance forms, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam,  was held at Thrippunithura, Eranakulam, Kerala on 11th of April. The maestros were honoured with Mohiniyattam and Kathakali performances. The whole event was well organised .

Centenary Celebrations of the Maestros of Indian Classical Dance


The hundredth birth anniversary of Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, the legends of the classical dance forms of Kerala - Kathakali and Mohiniyattam- are to be celebrated on 11th April 2014 at Layam Ground, Thrippunithura, Kerala.


Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (1914-1990), who was titled ‘Padmashree’ in 1970, had done rich contributions to Kathakali, the traditional classical dance drama of Kerala. The artist, born in 1914 is a native of Payyannur, North Kerala . Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma (1915-1999), the Mohiniyattam exponent and native of Tirunnavaya, uplifted the art form to mainstream and popularized it. 

The centenary celebrations will be inaugurated by G Karthikeyan, Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly, on 11/Apr/2014 at 05.00pm. Mohiniyattam performances by students of Kalyanikutty Amma organized by Sreedevi Rajan and Kala Vijayan, the daughters of the artist couple, will be staged at 06.00pm. Another highlight of the day is the Kathakali performance which will be staged from 07.30pm onwards. Story: ‘Nalacharitham Naalam Divasam’ (Nalacharitham-the fourth day).

Anniversary Celebrations of Kathakali club, Thrissur

49th Anniversary Celebrations of Kathakali club, Thrissur was held at Parammekkavu temple agrasala at Thrissur, Kerala.

The plays 'Nalacharitham Randam Divasam’ and ‘Baka Vadham’ featuring Kalamandalam Gopi, Nelliyodu Vasudevan Namboodiri, Margi Vijayakumar, Kalamandalam Manoj, Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier, Kalamandalam Shanmughadas and others were staged.
